People over 55 are getting more adventurous when it comes to their travelling habits.
Because of this, some of them may be interested in Borneo holidays as they look to expand their cultural horizons.
Research by Post Office Travel Insurance noted people in this age group will spend 3.7 months abroad at a cost of over £4,000.
Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand are among the other destinations that interest the intrepid travellers.
Sarah Munro, head of travel insurance at the Post Office, said: "Age shouldn't be a barrier when it comes to experiencing different cultures and spreading your wings."
Some 37 per cent parents admitted the idea of a family gap year appealed to them, while 76 per cent think it would be good for their child's education.
One state in Malaysia that people may want to visit is Sabah, which is located in the north of Borneo and celebrated for its beauty.
