August may be the height of summer events in Britain in 2012, with the Olympics and Cultural Olympiad in full swing, but staycations are not your only way of enjoying festivals this year.
Thailand holidays will offer just as much cultural stimuli in August, with Phuket in particular hosting a wide range of events.
What's on in Phuket in August 2012
Phuket Seafood Fiesta
This month-long event runs throughout August at venues all over the island. Thousands turned out last year for the Seafood Fair on Rawai Beach, while Lobster Week is a festival within a festival and a great excuse to give something new a try.
Phor-Tor Red Turtle Chinese
The Hungry Ghost festival is an important part of the year for Phuket's ethnic Chinese. The fresh market on Ranong Road is one of the best places to experience the event, which includes lion dances, magic shows, special food dishes and live concerts.
Phuket Pineapple & The Annual Flower Expo
Held at Sapanhin Park in Phuket Town, this event involves pineapple peeling and processing contests, as well as flower arranging competitions. Gardeners from all over southern Thailand converge on Phuket for the festival.
Where to stay in Phuket
A tropical hideaway beside the beautiful Kata Noi Beach, this is the perfect getaway to relax after a day spent immersed in festivals and Thai culture. Air conditioning comes as standard in all the rooms, which most appreciate during August. There are also six swimming pools in which to cool off.
Amari Coral Beach Resort
Like Kata Thani, all rooms come with air conditioning. In addition, each comes with its own private balcony and stunning sea view. Situated on the southern corner of Patong, this is the ideal spot if you like to be close to the action. A private beach for residents means you have the best of both worlds on your doorstep.
